June 2015 e-news: Ways to Get Involved in our Work at Youthprise!
Save the date: Our Third Annual Summit
Rawr! It’s that time again, Youthprise is hosting our Third Annual Summit on Thursday, October 15th. This year we are partnering with the Minnesota Historical Society to address our theme: the use of technology to spark youth entrepreneurship, address racial disparities in Minnesota and inspire change in our communities. Coco and Breezy, youth entrepreneurs who grew up in Minnesota and now operate a successful sunglass design business in New York City, will deliver the keynote address. We will convene 300 attendees, a mix of youth and adults from across Minnesota, to learn from Coco and Breezy’s experiences as entrepreneurs, and to engage in a day filled with interactive breakout sessions and tech spaces. The Summit will take place on Thursday, October 15th from 8am-5pm at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul. Coco and Breezy will also meet with our Change Fellows while in town. You can learn more about the Summit in this youth-produced video (or just have fun watching dinosaurs!). Stay tuned for a registration link and make sure to save the date!
Join us in Detroit!
For the second year in a row Youthprise is partnering with Detroit Future Youth to co-coordinate the Youth Creating Worlds track at Allied Media Conference in Detroit. The Youth Creating Worlds track will highlight creative, youth-led, media-based organizing that takes us beyond the world we have inherited to new social paradigms and possibilities for radical change. Last year our participation as a track co-coordinator gave us the opportunity to learn from over 15 years of collaborative, youth-centered communications work. It has informed the ways we are structuring the planning for the annual Youthprise Summit and has shaped the ways that we think about collaborative media-making in our communications. More than 30% of the 2,000 attendees at AMC are youth, which allowed our team to interact with young people from across the country, and positioned the young people we brought from partner organizations to build long-lasting relationships with peers from other states. AMC provides a national platform for Minnesota-based organizations to showcase their work, learn and have fun! You can learn more about our track and the Allied Media Conference here.
Apply for a grant!
In 2015, Youthprise is providing two grant opportunities to nonprofit organizations to advance our strategic goals in Systems Building and Innovation in Youth Engagement. We will continue to provide grants to build the capacity of organizations to participate in out-of-school time/expanded learning systems (OST). In addition, we will provide challenge grants for programs that test innovation in youth engagement, use approaches for youth participatory action research, and for youth philanthropy. We are framing these grant opportunities under Systems Building – Capacity Building Grants and Innovation in Youth Engagement – Challenge Grants. You can read more about both of these opportunities here, or attend one of our grant information sessions:
