Youthprise 2015 Annual Report
Letter from Wokie and Joe

As an organization that reached its fifth year in 2015, it has been imperative for Youthprise to respond to a changing national and local climate. As Minnesota grows more diverse, we need to look to communities impacted by disparities to develop solutions. Racial Equity is a core component of our work and in 2015 we implemented a racial equity plan that applies an equity lens across all of our work.

For instance, we refined our capacity building grants to prioritize supporting organizations whose board and staff reflect the communities they serve. And through initiatives like Community Ambassadors, we supported a multi-faceted partnership with city government, the police department, business owners and numerous private foundations that resulted in a huge decrease in the number of young people from Saint Paul’s Eastside entering the criminal justice system.

In short, we know that in order to ensure that all Minnesota youth thrive, we must support the youth who are facing the greatest disparities.

2015 was also a year of continued experimentation for Youthprise. We expanded our Nutrition Program to include 14 afterschool and summer learning sites, serving more than 67,000 nutritious meals! We launched Opportunity Reboot through a Social Innovation Fund grant to provide opportunity youth with meaningful workforce development opportunities. And we supported a statewide youth-led research network to change the ways we think about collecting and disseminating data about youth.

We spearheaded the Somali Youth Development Fund to support Somali youth in Minnesota and to tap into the ingenuity and creativity of their community. Throughout, we made sure that the voices of Minnesota’s youth were front and center. Internally, our Board of Directors established a youth/adult co-chair model for all board committees, ensuring that youth voice is heard through all levels of governance.

As our country and state continue to shift and grow, we look forward to shifting and changing as an organization to address new challenges and different opportunities to do our work to ensure that all youth have the opportunity to thrive in this beautifully diverse state we are proud to call our home.

Investing in Capacity Building

Youthprise prioritizes investing in organizations that have a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In our review process, we consider how the racial and ethnic composition of an organization’s staff and board are reflective of youth participants.

Of the 44 Organizations supported:

YOUTH BOARD STAFF
4% 5% 6% American Indian / Alaska Native
13% 8% 11% Asian / Asian American
37% 25% 36% Black / African American
17% 11% 10% Hispanic / Latino
19% 52% 38% White / Caucasian

Events 2015

Youthbank Training

Sites were provided a 3.5 day orientation and training process to implement the YouthBank process.

Pilot sites received an initial $10,000 investment from Youthprise to grant into their communities and had access to an additional dollar for dollar leverage match up to $15,000.

In addition to the training, sites were also provided technical assistance, learning community meetings, and additional training on the granting making process.

8 Youthbank pilot sites were trained, the first U.S.-based sites utilizing the YouthBank International model.

Black History Month

Eyes on the Prize: Honoring Black Excellence

Youthprise’s annual Black History Month (BHM) celebration has become a central part of celebrating the rich diversity of Minnesota’s communities of African descent. A diverse group of individuals from our community have attended our series of events, which have been featured on various media outlets, such as MPR, WCCO News, KMOJ Radio, KFAI Radio Insight News, and the Spokesman Recorder.

Allied Media Conference

The Allied Media Conference is a Detroit-based annual collaborative laboratory of media-based organizing strategies for transforming the world. They recognize media as any way that people communicate with the world – and young people communicate with the world in a multitude of ways.

Youthprise collaborated to put on 2 tracks at the 2015AMC

  • Research Justice track
  • Youth Creating Worlds track

To commemorate the experiences we gathered attending the 2014AMC we published a digital Newsflash, taking in exactly what kind of impact this type of work could have on MN.
